DEFTONES Drummer Talks About Collaboration With SYSTEM OF A DOWN's TANKIAN
September 22, 2006DEFTONES drummer Abe Cunningham recently spoke to AOL Music about the guest appearances on the band's upcoming album "Saturday Night Wrist" by SYSTEM OF A DOWN's Serj Tankian and GIANT DRAG's Annie Hardy.
Tankian, a longtime DEFTONES associate, appears on the track "Mein", which offers a different kind of vocal performance than fans are used to from the frontman.
"You can tell it's totally him, but it's not way up there, like operatic," Abe Cunningham tells AOL Music. "It's smooth. It happened to work out kind of cool. It wasn't a planned thing."
The Hardy collaboration wasn't planned either. As the three years it took to make "Saturday Night Wrist" were winding down, DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno bumped into the singer while he was in L.A. recording his final vocals.
"It was one of those chance things," Cunningham says. Moreno recruited Hardy to duet on the track "Pink Cellphone". "It's a little back-and-forth action between a guy and a girl, and it just adds a really nice change to the record," says the drummer. "I think she's reading out of this old self-help book. It just sounds very cool in contrast to everything else."
